Adresses of Nazi-Terror

Since the foundation of the German Reich in 1871 Wilhelmstreet was the administrative center of the capital Berlin und at the same time the symbol of a democratic Germany.

The “capturing” of Wilhelmstreet was the declaired objective of Adolf Hitler, whose “seizure of power” on January 30th 1933 led him to the Reich Chancellery.

Within only one year the National Socialists converted Wilhelmstreet into their center of power. Only a stone´s throw away from the initially civilized scenery the center of terror of the “Third Reich” came into existence with the HQ of the Secret State Police GESTAPO at Prince-Albrecht-Street 8. Here political opponents and other critics of the Nazi-regime were arrested.

For many prisoners torture continued at Sachsenhausen concentration camp, about 35 miles away from Berlin: here, from 1936 to 1945, about 200.000 people were arrested, 40.000 of them killed by the SS or died of starvation or due to medical experiments.
